Gillette Castle State Park, 67 River Road, East Haddam, CT

This box has been planted in response to the rash of letterboxes that were stolen at Gillette Castle State Park. Snoopy has returned Defiant.

Pull into Gillette Sate Park and drive .3 of a mile to turn into a parking area on the left. After parking, go to the end of the lot and around the wooden car barrier that has a no parking, emergency exit sign on it. Take the trail straight ahead that has a RR7S sign on the left and a "Bikes, Horses, &Vehicles prohibited" sign on the right. This is part of the old narrow gauge railroad line that was on this property. Proceed over a long elevated wooden bridge with a view of the pond on the right. Stay on this trail and go through the railroad tunnel. As soon as you get out of the tunnel there is a Y intersection. Bear left with the old RR line. You come to a place where the trail is blocked by boards and arrows pointing up a small hill. The old RR line actually went straight here on wooden timbers, hanging over the side of the cliff. Follow the arrows up the small hill and immediately you come to another trail. Don’t take this trail but go back down the hill on a small path at 60 degrees.

This is basically a detour around the dangerous boarded off spot of the railroad line. Immediately as you go back down the hill you pass a neat rock cavern on the left. You are now back on the old RR line. Keep going until you come to a wooden bar across the path and steps to the left. On the left is where you can see the remnants of the old turn around area for the train. This was the end of the line and the train would go in a small circle to head back the way it came. From this barrier take a reading of 10 degrees. Remember this sighting. That is the direction you must go off trail until you come to a stone wall. Go down the steps and around to the right to get down to the place you want. When you get to a stone wall, follow it at 320 degrees on the northeast side of the wall. Follow it until you get to a corner of the wall. There all you need do is move the wooden door to find Snoopy Defiant. Go back the way you came.
