The Billy Goat Curse

6/10/07 - Box pulled - Retired

Placed: 3-6-04
Planted By: WWW (Formerly known as Chuck and Molly)
Location: Waterford, Connecticut, New London County
Rated: Easy. 1 small grassy hill, About .5 round trip or less. Plenty of parking.

From the intersection of Route 395 and 85 in Waterford, take Route 85 southeast as though you were going to the Crystal Mall. Take the first left which is Douglas Lane.

Coming from the Crystal Mall, Drive northeast past the Target store and take your first right onto Douglas Lane.

Drive about a mile down Douglas Lane to the intersection of Vauxhall St Ext. Take a right here onto Vauxhall St Ext. and travel about .4 of a mile to find the entrance to Leary Park on the left, opposite Silva Street. Pull into Leary Park and follow only road into the park. Park as far down as you can. You will see a ball field off to the left and at the end of the paved road is a cement rest room building. Walk to the left of the rest room building and follow the unpaved dirt road. When you come to a stone wall on the right, there you see a tennis court on the left and a small children’s playground on the right with a slide and swings, go to the small playground. Go to the southwest corner of the small playground to a trail entrance. Follow this trail. It is very short and quickly comes out of the woods overlooking a ball field. Still follow the trail between the fence and ball field. The trail will suddenly stop in back of the ball field outfield fence. Follow along the back of that fence a very short distance to see a trail down the sloping hill on your right. As you enter this trail you will notice a stone wall on each side of the trail. From this wall, walk 35 steps down the trail. Stop here. And see a oak tree off the trail in front of a broken down stone wall. The tree grows into a Y trunk at about neck level. Look at the base of the south side of the tree. Under a lot of sticks is the letterbox. Return the way you came. The "In Search of the Billy Goat Curse" letterbox will be pulled, never to appear again, as soon as the Chicago Cubs Wrigley Field has a world series game played in it.

The Billy Goat Curse

It was 1945 and the Chicago Cubs had won the pennant for the first time since 1908. They were the champs of the National League. The world series that year was the Chicago Cubs against the Detroit Tigers. The Cubs had won 2 out of 3 games at Tiger stadium. They only needed to win 2 of the remaining 4 games to be played at the Cub’s Wrigley Field. October 6, 1945 started out as a very hopeful day for Chicago Cubs fans but would be remembered ever since as the day of the Billy Goat Curse.

Greek immigrant, and restaurant owner, William "Billy Goat" Sianis was an avid Cubs fan and was accustomed to bringing his pet goat Murphy along with him to the ball games. They say he believed the goat being at the game would bring the team good luck. On this day he and Murphy were approached by ushers and told that no goats were allowed even though Sianis had bought a ticket for the goat. When asked why the goat was being ejected, the reply was that the goat smelled. In retaliation, Sianis raised both hands in the air and exclaimed "Cubs they not gonna win anymore. They never gonna be another World Series played at Wrigley Field.". That was the start of the curse. The Tigers then won the next 3 games and the series. It is said that Sianis sent a telegram to P. K. Wrigley saying "Who smells now". The Cubs have never again made it to a world series. There has not been a World Series played at Wrigley field ever since the curse. Sianis’ restaurant prospered and is now world famous. It is known as the Billy Goat Tavern and is located in several Chicago area locations. His descendants have tried many times to lift the curse but the curse continues to this day. For more information about the curse of the Billy Goat, look at the following websites:
